Soon it will be Glühwein time

Most people believe they should drink wine cold or at least never above room temperature.  However there is a wine that may be drunk warm.  Glühwein is the hot wine drink that has been drunk from ancient times in Germany.
Glühwein is warmed up differently from Japanese traditional sake, because in this case citrus fruits such as lemon, oranges and spices are added and the wine is simmered at a low heat.  Glüh is the German word from the verb "glühen" which means to glow. Wein is the German word for wine. Glühwein has been used as a medicine which heats up the body and allows the body to survive cold German winters.
In Germany in the middle of the month of December, the Christmas season is fast approaching.  There are Christmas markets selling Santa’s gifts and ornaments to decorate Christmas tree stands all around the different towns.  You can also smell the delightful fragrance of Glühwein there too!  One can buy Glühwein from stalls at the Christmas markets.  One can also buy a lot of spices sold at the Christmas market to make Glühwein at home.

Making Glühhwein is quite simple.  You first need to make syrup scented with spices such as cinnamon and cloves and add them to some red wine and warm it all up at low heat.
Traditional Glühwein is made using red wine.  However there are a number of variations depending upon the region.  In Frankfurt, apple wine is used instead of red wine.

Glühwein is a drink that is often enjoyed by the whole family during the Christmas season.  Drinking warm Glühwein when one returns frozen after a skiing excursion is quite exceptional.

Homemade Glühwein is easy to enjoy especially since one can now buy ready-made spice packs in stores.  Put the spice packs in the saucepan and warm it up, it is ready.  Let your body and soul enjoy the chilly winter season by drinking a cup of warm homemade Glühwein.

To make Glühwein it is best to use a dry wine and one which has not too much tannin. In this context wines made with Merlot, Pinot Noir or Dornfelder grapes are highly recommended.

How to make Glühwein

■Ingredients

Red wine…1 bottle 720ml

Water…3/4 cup
White sugar…3/4 cup
Cinnamon stick…1 stick
Cloves…10 pieces
Orange…1 fruit

■Instruction
1. Put the water, white sugar and cinnamon stick in a saucepan.  Put on the heat and once it boils, reduce the heat and leave on low heat.
2. Cut the orange in two and squeeze the juice out of the orange.  Stick the cloves into the the orange peels and add the peels and orange juice to the saucepan.  Simmer for about 30 minutes until it turns into syrup.
3. Add the wine to the syrup and heat it.  Remove the orange peels with the cloves and pour the wine into a mug or a warmed up glass.  Please be careful because cold glasses break with heat.

Tasting notes

Brillant ruby colour. With youthfull frangrances of spice, black berry, bouquet garni, mulberry fruit and sweet candy. They all  harmonize very nicely. This is a well balanced wine with mellow fruit flavours and a lively acidity. The acidity is moderate, it tightens the taste and emphazises extracts.
