Chateau du Gazin, Fam. Robert, St Michel Fronsac

Gazin_resize.jpgChateau du Gazin is situated on the right side bank of the Dordogne river, next to the Saint Emilion and Pomerol appellations. The origins of the chateau dates back to 1532 when it was a Seignorial domain. Already at that time superior wines were produced on the Domaine. In 1715 the owner changed. The chateau and wine cellars as we know them now were built at that time. Only the original dovecote is preserved. In 1935 the chateau was purchased by Georges Robert and since then has been owned by the family.

Gazin-grape_resize.jpgThe estate is comprised of 30 hectares, made up of a single piece of land. 24 hectares are of the Canon-Fronsac appellation and 6 hectares of the Fronsac appellation. The soil composition is similar to the one in Saint Emilion i.e. limestone clay on a limestone bank. The vineyard is situated on a slope exposed to the south. The slope also ensures that the soil is well drained. The nearby Dordogne River serves as a natural temparature equalizer.

The average age of the vines is about 35 years. 85 % of the grapes are Merlot, 5 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 5 % Cabernet Franc and 5 % Malbec. Over time the share of Cabernet Franc grapes will be increased.
