Tasting notes

About half of the wine was aged for 4-6 months in French oak barrels.  In the glass the wine shows an intense ruby red color.  On the nose the wine displays red fruits such as ripe plums and cherries and light aromas of toasted barrels.  The wine is elegant, rounded, balanced and with a well integrated structure of ripe tannins.  It is medium to full bodied and ends on a slightly spicy and fruity finish.  Serve at 17-20°C.

VIŇA SANTA EMA, Isla de Maipo

Vina Santa Ema is a family owned estate and winery located right at the center of the traditional Chilean wine industry in the Maipo Valley.  The Pavone family traces its origins back to Pedro Pavone who immigrated to Chile in 1917 from Piemonte in Italy.  He was captivated by the beauty of the area and the possibility to produce wines of excellent quality. He bought land in 1931 and started to grow grapes which he sold to local wineries.  Twenty-five years later, having acquired a solid reputation for the quality of his grapes he decided to produce his own wines.  Like the grapes he sold originally, the wines too quickly became much sought after.  His son Felix who later took over expanded the business further and bought a large parcel of land in the Peumo area.  The area is recognized as Chile's top prime land to grow high quality red wine grapes.  In 1986 the company exported wines for the first time.  Now its wines are exported to over 30 countries around the world.  In 2003, it inaugurated a new winery in El Peralm at the time Chile's most modern winery.  With all the progress made the Pavone family is, however, particularly proud of the recognition the quality of its wines have achieved in Chile and internationally.  The Wine Advocate rated its wines several times above 90 points, it was chosen as one of the world's top 20 Best Wine Values by the Wine Spectator while Wine & Spirits named it the Winery of the Year.
Vina Santa Ema grows vines in several regions and areas of Chile (Maipo, Cachapoal, Casablanca and Leyda) ensuring that the grapes grown in each area are well suited to produce high quality wines of character and typicity.  The estate and winery produces a variety of quality ranges from everyday wines to rare, exquisite wines and long aging potentials.  The white wines are Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay while the red wines are either varietal wines such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Syrah and Caignan or artful blends of these varieties.
