Domaine R de la Grange, Le Landreau

Domaine R de la Grange_resize.jpgThe Domaine R de la Grange is a family estate and owned by a father and son team of the eighth generation.  The domaine has a surface of 27 hectares and is located near Nantes.  While the region belongs to the Loire appellation, the much cooler climate here is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean.  The name "Muscadet" is rather odd as it is neither the grape variety nor the name of a location as is usual for French wines.  The designation is meant to refer to a musk-like flavor of the Melon de Bourgogne grape variety, which, however, most will find very hard to detect.  The hardy variety was introduced to the region at the beginning of the 17th century.
The region is composed of different soils such as silt and sand above sub-soils of gneiss or schist or granite or volcanic rock.  All soil variations drain well and this is important for the vines.  Essentially two kinds of Muscadet are produced, the Muscadet simple and the Muscadet-sur-lie.  Both are dry but the "sur-lie" wines have a creamier taste and a fuller body mouthfeel and more texture.  This derives from staying for a long period in contact with the yeast cells in the barrel.  To keep the flavour and texture, the wines are bottled directly from the casks without filtration.  It should be noted that the Muscadet is the only wine in France regulated to not exceed a degree of 12% of alcohol (which makes it the perfect wine to accompany seafood of all kinds).  Muscadet are best consumed within 2-3 years, some top grade ones though may age up to 10 years.
The Domaine R de la Grange produces an extensive variety of wines.  The Gros Plant, a selection of traditional Muscadet-sur-lie, an exceptional Muscadet Goulaine, an unusual, fruity Chardonnay, two red wines and a selection of sparkling wines.  They have also been awarded numerous awards for the quality of their wines.
